Yanek Gruner- This is the main character that we follow throughout the entire book, he is the lone survivor of his family. He becomes a very dynamic character that thrives to survive in a place and time where death was everywhere and it come to you at anytime. As you can see in multiple different examples throughout the book, it is a mirracle that he survived all of it. We see his humble begins all the way through the end of the Nazi occupation and Yanek has been forever changed by the horrific things done to them by the Nazi. We see everyside of Yanek the good and the bad, it is amazing that he could survive with all the adversities that he was faced with.
Issac- He was a young man in the Plaszow Concentration Camp he is one of the boys that Yanek is hiding with under the floorboards of the barracks. Issac was around 12 years old at the time just like Yanek. After the boys run into Amon Geoth we never here about Issac again.
Thomas-This was the other young boy that was hiding with Issac and Yanek under the floor boards of the barracks, i belive he was the youngest one at the age of 8 or 9. And just like Issac we dont hear of him again after the boys run into Amon Geoth in the barracks.
Fred- Fred was in my opinion the best side character of the book, he was Yaneks first friend that he had actually made since the Nazi occupation had began. He was the same age as Yanek when they met, they were at Aushwitz. Fred and Yanek begin to look out for eachother and become good friends, and then Fred gets sick and is unable to work. Yanek tries to get him up but the Nazi's had other plans for Fred. AFter they had beaten him and cut him, they hung him in the gallows in the middle of the camp so all would see that if you do not work it will kill you. After this loss to Yanek he never gets close with a fellow prisoner again.
Umcle Moshe-He seemed like a mean old man at the beginning of the book but he turns into this mentor for Yanek that helps him understand how to srvive during the hardships that the nazi put them through. Moshe is the reason Yanek lives through all of the hardships that he faces. Moshe is murdered by Amon Geoth in the Plaszow concentration camp for no reason which leave Yanek to be the only remaining family member.
Dad- We never learn this man's actual name Yanek only refers to him as dad, he helped Yanek become a man during the beginning of the Nazi occupation. Sadly Yaneks mom and dad are both abducted by the Nazi when they were headed home from the store. We later learn that dad was killed at the Plazsow concentration camp along with the rest of Yanek's family.
Amon Geoth- He is the ruthless camp comandant at Plazsow, this man is responsible for thousands of jewish lives that he took himself. He is the man who killed uncle Moshe for no reason, he did it just because he felt like it. He was one of the worst people we see throughout the book, and for good reason.
